Chaos

from $3.00

"Chaos" is a powerful 24x36 inch oil painting that captures the intensity and turbulent nature of a stormy sea, reflecting a particularly tumultuous year in the artist's life. This evocative piece employs similar techniques to Teagan's other wave paintings, yet delves into darker themes, creating a visceral and haunting symbolic portrayal of inner turmoil.

“I really hated Chaos, back when I was painting it. It seemed like everything I did was awful, and muddy, and bad, like every stroke was fighting back, and like I’d never be my favorite self again. It mirrored my life in 2015. I had isolated myself, made some reckless choices, gotten out of more than one moving vehicle, and was despairing to find my motivation to live a meaningful life after graduating from university. Moving back home during that time, I started recovering from ‘the dark year.’ It took a long time, and a lot of yoga, weekly therapy, daily sunshine, wholesome foods, and deep rest to feel like myself again. I like to think of myself as someone who thrives despite bad times. I just keep swimming. When I wake with the sun each morning, I am awestruck by this excerpt of, “Invitation” by Mary Oliver.

“not for the sake of winning

but for sheer delight and gratitude—

believe us, they say,

it is a serious thing

just to be alive

on this fresh morning

in the broken world.”

This formidable wave roils and churns with energy; it dominates the entire canvas, swallowing even the wall on which it hangs. Teagan layers rich, dark hues of deep blues, inky teals, and somber navy. These translucent layers create a profound depth, allowing the wave to exude a sense of foreboding and unrest. The interplay of light and shadow within the glazes enhances the painting's dramatic tension, drawing the viewer into its emotional depths.

Teagan’s palette knife adds impasto texture and movement to the stormy waters. Thick, bold strokes of oil paint mimic the turbulent, frothy crests and troughs of the wave, giving it a tactile, three-dimensional quality. The heavy application of paint captures the raw power and intensity of the storm, each stroke reflecting emotional upheaval.

Special attention is given to the depiction of wave spray, adding to the painting's dynamic and chaotic feel. Fine droplets and splashes are meticulously rendered, conveying the wild, uncontrolled nature of the storm. This delicate detailing contrasts with the bold impasto waves, highlighting the painting's complexity and depth.

With no background to distract, the viewer's focus is entirely on the wave itself, amplifying its overwhelming presence. The lack of a horizon or sky emphasizes the all-consuming nature of the storm, creating a sense of being engulfed by the tumultuous waters.

"Chaos" is not just a painting; it is an expression of turbulence. Collected in 2018, this artwork resonates with anyone who has faced their own inner storms. Through its masterful use of techniques and evocative subject matter, the painting stands as a testament to the artist's ability to channel profound emotion into her work, creating a haunting and poignant portrayal of devastation and resilience.
