The Great Wave
"The Great Wave" is a mesmerizing 24x36 inch oil painting that pays tribute to the iconic "Great Wave off Kanagawa" by Katsushika Hokusai. This modern interpretation captures the awe-inspiring power and beauty of a tall, cresting wave, rendered with a combination of traditional and contemporary techniques.
“I look fondly upon this wave as the first of many. Ironically, it all began with my stubborn insistence that I could not paint water in even a semi-realistic way.
After a good deal of griping, my mentor, in his gruff British manner, dismissed me soundly with a wave of his hand and said, 'If it’s trash, we’ll burn it in the can out front.'
Only now, many years later, do I see what he saw. This wave now hangs in the gallery of my heart as a constant reminder of the old adage, 'Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.' Just keep painting.”
The wave dominates the composition, its towering form captured with striking realism and dynamic energy. Teagan employs the Flemish glazing technique to achieve a breathtaking range of vivid deep blues, bright aquamarines, and teals. These layers of translucent paint allow light to penetrate and reflect, creating a luminous effect that gives the wave a lifelike depth and vibrancy.
To bring texture and motion to the wave, Teagan uses the impasto technique, applying thick layers of oil paint with a palette knife. This method adds a tactile, almost sculptural quality to the wave's crest, capturing the turbulent, frothy spray with dramatic intensity. Each stroke of the palette knife creates ridges and valleys in the paint, mimicking the natural movement and chaos of the sea. Her students still can’t believe the oil paint stays wet in the core of the texture for up to 1 year after painting before she can varnish it.
A special process is used to depict the wave spray, enhancing the realism and energy of the scene. Fine droplets and splashes are meticulously applied, giving the impression of water in mid-air, suspended for a timeless moment before crashing down. This delicate detailing works with the bold, impasto texture, adding a sense of immediacy and action. In the background, the horizon line is subtly blurred, focusing attention on the majesty of the wave while hinting at the endless expanse of the ocean beyond.
"The Great Wave" is more than just a painting; it's a reverent nod to one of history's most famous works of art, reimagined through Teagan's unique artistic lens. This piece captures the timeless power of the ocean, blending traditional techniques with modern applications to create a visually stunning and emotionally resonant work. Perfect for any art or ocean lover, this painting brings a piece of the sublime beauty of the sea into your home.
