Hanalei Bay
"Hanalei Bay” captures the raw power and mesmerizing beauty of a tubular wave off Hanalei Beach on Kauai, in Hawaii. Measuring 24 by 48 inches, with a gallery-wrapped, fully painted & textured edge, this panoramic oil painting invites viewers to experience the dynamic energy of the ocean.
“I began painting this wave in early summer 2020, amidst a world in upheaval. My job had ended suddenly, and I was grappling with the terror and tumult of the times, searching for a 'new normal.' As I painted this wave, I reflected on how fortunate I was to have left the ship and returned home to the States from the coast off Sydney, Australia. I felt incredibly lucky to have my fiancé by my side as we navigated these challenges together.
While working on Hanalei Bay, I wanted to honor all fellow crew members scattered across the globe, many of whom faced immense hardships with far less support. I also wanted to pay tribute to those who suffered as the pandemic raged on. This painting is a celebration of the love story I found with my husband in Hawaii before everything changed, and a testament to who we became despite the circumstances.
Through 'Hanalei Bay,' I aimed to bring a touch of beauty back into my corner of the world. The process took me nearly two years, as I carefully added more minutely glazed layers than I had ever created before. Each layer was a step toward honoring resilience, love, and the search for hope in dark times”
The focal point of the painting is the formidable wave itself, curling with a majestic grace as it crashes into the surface of the sea. Vivid blues, aquamarines, and teals dominate the canvas, each hue meticulously layered using the Flemish glazing technique. This method allows light to penetrate the multiple layers of translucent paint, creating a luminous, almost glowing effect that brings the water to life.
The crest of the wave is painted with a palette knife, using thick, expressive, impasto strokes, giving it a textured, tangible quality. The heavy application of paint captures the frothy turbulence of the wave’s peak, with each brushstroke mimicking the movement and energy of the surf. Sunlight filters through the translucent curl of the wave, casting intricate patterns of light and shadow that dance across the surface of the water.
"Hanalei Bay" is more than just a depiction of a wave; it’s a celebration of the ocean’s power and beauty, immortalized through Teagan’s skilled use of contrasting techniques. The combination of impasto and Flemish glazing results in a piece that is rich in texture, depth, and luminosity, offering a visual feast for the eyes. This painting will bring a sense of awe and tranquility to any space, capturing the timeless allure of Hanalei Bay's surf.
